Rony & John

Crazy But True: John Carney, who was recently forced to choose between canasta and kicking field goals for the New Orleans Saints, made his debut in the NFL on November 27, 1988 while playing for Tampa Bay in a loss at Atlanta.

Also making his debut for a professional sports team in Florida that fall was one Rony Seikaly, who debuted with the Miami Heat, who were also making their debut that season as an expansion club.

In other words, John Carney and Rony Seikaly became pro athletes the same year. Rony Seikaly, who played in more than 600 games, accumulated more than $27 million in career earnings, is a full year younger than Carney, and left the NBA in the Clinton Administration.

To those fathers out there with sons: Start training that kid to kick a football immediately.

Kids?! Hell, it sounds like WE'RE still young enough to kick in the NFL.
