Backing Down The Onramp Of Life?

"Hello, Dad? I'm in JAIL!"

Gary Payton was arrested for a suspected DUI last week after police spotted the former Supersonic backing down a freeway onramp. (Is that some kind of career metaphor or what?)

During what is surely the worst summer of his life, The Glove© was embarrassed in the Finals by Chauncey Billups (Chauncey Billups!) in June, traded to the Celtics for Chucky Atkins (Chucky ATKINS!!) in August, and now gets pulled over for a Dale Ellis-like drunk driving stunt.

I think somebody needs a hug.

  1. Once again, a word in GP's defense.

1: His blood alochol was at .08, which is just at the legal limit. The police have stated that because his BAC was so close to the limit, they likely won't even charge him with a DUI. He had 2 drinks at dinner, then drove home. Does that sound like a drunken fool?

2: He had just entered the freeway on-ramp, at which time he saw that traffic was at a complete standstill. It was 1:15am, and he figured that since traffic on the sidestreets was so quiet, he could just back up and go another way home. If you've ever driven on an LA or SD freeway, you know what it's like when it's blocked. You don't move. Period. Again, not a big deal. Unlike Ellis, who drove the wrong way on an on-ramp and then smashed his car into a barrier, Payton was just trying to turn around.

In sum, GP did something that every smartass talk-radio that is criticizing him today has done at least 5 times in his lifetime. For God sakes, the man had 2 drinks with dinner then drove home. Let's not bury the guy.
