Green and Gold Tonight

Have any plans tonight? The Sonics are having their annual Green and Gold Scrimmage in Kenmore this evening. Chunk is out of town, Nussbaum is in Canada, and I'm working overtime for The Plumber this week, so we call on you, our loyal Supersonic Souljahs, to grab your digital camera and head over to the eastside tonight to give us the full scoop. If we use your story and pictures, we'll send you an official Supersonicsoul T-Shirt. Don't worry—I'll tape "My Name is Earl" for you.

  1. God love you, Paul, you picked the best show of the year. In my mind, there are two reasons to watch TV; Lost and Earl.

Okay, three, if you include Q13 News - that fat New York guy is so unbelievable bad he's fun to watch. I'm guessing his BO quotient under those hot TV lights is somewhere in the stratosphere.

  2. His name is New York Vinnie, and HE'S NOT FAT!! He's just . . . uh . . . overly large.

Actually, I saw him here in Ballard last summer dishing out ice cream at Ben & Jerry's as part of some charity deal. It was about 90 degrees outside. Let's just say having a sweaty 300-pound man dripping on your food is not the prettiest sight. He was a walking health code violation.

I felt sorry for the guy though because he looked totally exhausted, and he kept throwing these dirty looks at Tony Ventrella, who was yucking it up with the peoples and handing out balloons to babies while poor Vinnie had to do all the grunt work. Good times!

  3. p.s. Tonight's "My Name is Earl" was a repeat of the pilot. Best line:

Prostitute: "He wouldn't have sex with me—I even took out my good boob!"

  4. I was at the scrimmage. I'll focus on Swift, who looked pretty impressive. He scored half the points in the third game I think and was active on the defensive end as well, challenging lots of shots. One thing you can’t help notice is the almost clown-like size of Swift’s shoes. They must be size 27 or something because when he was guarding Petro, you could see Swift’s shoes were 50% longer than Petro’s. When he runs down the court, he kind of flips his toes up when he runs so that he won’t trip over them. Looks like a sprained ankle waiting to happen…

That being said, he is surprisingly athletic and has very long arms. He has good coordination on the offensive end, showing some nice spin moves while warming up along with a nice running hook shot. His problem is learning how to make those shots while getting bumped by another player. You can tell he also thinks too much and probably has confidence issues with his game. He looked great during the scrimmages but probably because he’s playing against people he knows. I also couldn’t get out of my mind that he and Petro are only a year older than some of the high school seniors that were doing shooting drills earlier in the night.

He needs to change his mindset and feel like he can dominate against the centers of this league. Sounds like Petro has that already, hence why he seems to have moved ahead of Swift in the rotation so quickly. I’m sure once Swift gets some regular PT and suits up for every game that his confidence will grow. I’ll tell you one thing, it is impressive standing at court level with him and Petro…they are huge guys. With the typical big man contributing until he’s 35 in this league, we could be looking at 16 years’ worth of twin tower action (barring major injury). Tough to not get excited about that prospect.

Scales and Wilkins also looked good last night. Ray’s jumper is silky smooth up close. Flip was chucking up bricks as usual. Felix can jump out of the gym.

  5. No way a guy Swift's size plays 16 years in the league. If his feet really are that big, he's one Shaq rebound away from a broken foot, an ended career, and a part in "My Giant 2."

  6. Who knows, Mutombo and Ewing played for a looooong time.

    How did Rad look?

Also, Brunson vs Scales vs Cleaves? Anyone stand out last night?

  7. D Mason is traded again. This time back to Oklahoma.

  8. Aren't all WNBA players gay?

Seriously, Danny, I'm with you all the way. It's messed up that people even care about what celebs/jocks do in their personal life—just enjoy the game folks!

I think there are a hell of a lot of closet cases in sports—I mean, they shower with naked dudes every day! I don't blame 'em for not coming out, though—there are a lot of right-wing peckerwoods with guns out there, even in this city.

Oh yeah, and Reggie Theus was totally gay.

  10. "BUT SERIOUSLY! IF THATS ALL IT TOOK WE COULD HAVE MAGLOIRE RIGHT NOW!"

You have to have the right combination of players/picks/cash. There's not really a combination that Seattle could have offered that would have matched contracts, fan appeal (Oklahoma State connection), #1 pick unprotected (Seattles draft pick is seen to be too high) and cash.

Magloire would have been a nice piece to add, but we'd have been looking at a sign and trade deal probably sending them Vlad, our #1 next year and cash. That's a lot for Magloire.

  11. Swift ain't Mutumbo or Ewing.

  12. Pardon me, but I would have sent Radman and a pick for Magloire in a second...

Oh and my pick for gayest NBA player is Steve Kerr...

  13. I second the idea of the value of trading Radman for Magloire, but, unfortunately, it doesn't work for a couple of reasons:

    1. The Hornets have expressed publicly that the big reason they pulled the trigger is for the Bucks' unconditional #1 pick. Considering the woeful state of Mil. basketball (and, let's face it, Andrew Bogut ain't Shaq), this will likely be a lottery pick. The Sonics can't offer that to New Orleans/OK City.

    2. The Sonics can't trade Radman. Period. He is ineligible due to the CBA to be traded this year, even if he wants to go (it's complicated, but basically if a team re-signs a guy with Bird rights, such as Radman, they can't deal him that year). The only way it would have worked would have been a sign-and-trade with the Hornets, and Radman wasn't going to sign unless he got a long-term deal, which the Hornets probably don't want any part of.

Phew. Sorry for the longwindedness, but I thought I ought to clear that up.

  14. Since when is Kenmore considered east? It's really more north than anything...

  15. Hey, I live in Ballard—everything's east of here!
