Good-Bye, Mr. Flip

Flip Murray is no longer a member of the Seattle Supersonics.Flip Murray has taken his point guard "skills" to Cleveland, espn.com is reporting. The Cavs sent Seattle Mike Wilks, a 2nd-round pick, $500,000, and a pin from the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

Wilks, like Murray, is only signed through the end of the season, and is due to make about $700K this year. He's a 5'10" guard out of Rice University, making him the second Rice U. grad to suit up for the Sonics ($10 for naming the other one). Counting Wilks, the Sonics now have four PGs on their roster (including Rick Brunson, which Bob Hill would obviously rather not).

I can't imagine Wilks will get much playing time in Seattle, but since it's his 5th team in less than 4 years in the league, he's probably not too worked up about it. Although, after reading this article from a couple of years ago, you can't help but root for the guy.

(It's official)

  1. Wilks is worse than Flip, mark my words. You will remember my name when you see him play, my name will be burned in your skull when you see how bad this kid is.

  2. b_con thank you for the absence of B W (I'm too much of a gentleman to say his whole name) the pick of GP works just fine. Kudos.

  3. Basically, it looks like we dump Flip Murray and his salary (what there was of it) on Cleveland for Wilks and $500K, meaning Wilks will play for free this year. The 2nd-round pick is bonus.

Considering Murray wasn't going to play this year, it's not a bad move.

  4. Flip is better than most of those guys, but since Bob Hill is a terrible coach and couldn't buy Fordham a win when he coached there, he obviously didn't know how to use flip. Bob Hill's claim to fame is purely Smush Parker, who didn't really blossom until he played for someone else, namely Phil Jackson. Flip will work out well in Cleveland and the Sonics need to be blown up! Ray Allen only has a couple of years left and Rashard Lewis is at best a marginal player. Once Flip get's the time, he'll be a solid 20 ppg scorer in the league. Bron should help him tremendously.

  6. I'm not dumping this mess in Hill's lap. The Sonics overachieved last year, and they've regressed to the level they were at for the few years before. They're basically a .500 team that's playing a little below potential this year.

Now that Hill's got a decent backup at PG, and a decent PF in Wilcox, I'd expect the Sonics to play .500 or maybe even a little better the rest of the way. No matter what, though, bringing in another coach isn't going to change anything. The Sonics have tried a nice-guy approach (Weiss) and a hard-ass approach (Hill/McMillan), and nothing's worked with this group. For some reason, they just aren't coming together this year. Maybe the trades will shake things up a bit and give put some fire back into the locker room.

I wonder if you would catch the wrath of tree huggers wearing a "fir" coat, would they throw sap on you?

  17. Whoa Vin Baker huh? Cool wasn't he in the all-star game last year with his temmate Ray Allen, now that guy would be awesome on the Sonics, Bernie Bikerstaff should really look into bringing him here.

  18. Apparently, the 2nd round pick the Sonics were supposed to get has instead gone to Philly in the Lee Nailon deal. The Sonics get to keep the Rock and Roll HOF pin, though, so they've got that going for them.

  19. When did Philly get a team?!?!?!?!
