You know those Sports Illustrated videos that come out after a team wins a championship? Well, if SI decides to make one for the Sonics' season - and I'm not saying anyone would buy it, mind you, but bear with me here - they could save a whole pile of money if they just ran last night's loss to the Clippers instead. After all, the pieces were all there on display:
Fourth quarter disappearing act? Check
Coasting through the first half? Check
Overreliance on Allen and Lewis? Check
No low post presence? Check
Bewildered quotes after the game? Check
Frustrated coach? Check
As Rashard Lewis put it after the game was done, "It was just one of those nights."
One of those nights, one of those seasons, man.
At sonicscentral.com they're pleading for a veteran point guard to help this team, and on Gary Washburn's blog at the PI, he's pleading for a veteran big man.
ReplyDeleteSadly, they're both right. The Sonics desparately need a veteran hand to guide this team, and they desparately need someone down low who can defend and rebound. I really think that would make the difference in the 4th quarter in all these close games the Sonics lose.
Hey, if the Clippers weren't a title contender with a 100% healthy roster, we would have won last night... oh, wait a minute, never mind...
ReplyDeleteGreat point. I was thinking the same thing after the game. All year long we've been hearing about how injuries are hurting the Sonics. Then, the Sonics go into LA to play an injury-riddled team, while Seattle's got (almost) all of their bullets in their gun ... and they lay a complete and total egg.
ReplyDeleteI think the message to take from last night is that the final couple months of the season could get really ugly. Hill's temper has to be growing short, and I can't imagine the roster is too interested in hearing him yell at them when they know he's not coming back.
Just curious - if Ridnour or Watson haven't figured out how to be a winning point guard yet, how much longer do we have to wait?
ReplyDeleteA veteran point guard &mdash isn't that what Watson's supposed to be?
ReplyDelete'really ugly' is right on the mark. When the kids want to watch Survivor tonight instead of the game, I probably won't complain. My heart just isn't in it anymore, just like the team.
ReplyDeletegimmie p.j. brown please!
ReplyDeletewilcox did look amazing in the 3rd tho..
I agree, PJ Brown would be a great fit for the Sonics next year. If they can get him to go for a 1- or 2-year deal for something reasonable, that would be a stellar pickup. One area Rick Sund really failed this year is securing decent backup big men. Letting Mikki Moore go for nothing is something I'll bet he regrets all summer long. I can only assume he expected more from Fortson, hoped to get something via trade, planned on getting pretty good production from Swift, or something else, because it's a glaring weakness on this team.
ReplyDeleteOne area Rick Sund failed? I can't think of any he didn't fail. We've been wasting draft picks for the past couple years on "potential" players who never came through, and I'm willing to bet never will. If the Sonics end up staying in Seattle, I really think Hill and Sund should get the boot stamp on their asses. That's a big IF though...
