I'm guessing the NBA will announce the results of their vote from the Board of Governors meeting at about 5:38 pm on Friday, just so it gets buried in the weekend's other news, because it is painfully obvious to me that they are going to pass the motion.
Considering that only 16 of the 30 owners are required for approval, it would be extremely unlikely that a majority of 30 extremely wealthy people would find it in their hearts to side with fans over other extremely wealthy people.
In other news, Mayor Nickels and Gov. Gregoire sent out competing press releases to the NBA yesterday, Nickels refusing to sign the governor's missive because it failed to pledge any money towards the KeyArena renovation.
Stay tuned, as always, because you never know when the city is going to release more Clay Bennett emails.
We fans have the numbers, but not the power. Real power would be if we could organize a real threat to totally destroy the NBA, with franchise values going to zero. Zero! Think that would scare Stern and the owners? It's a pipe dream, because we _like_ the game too much to wreck the league.
ReplyDeleteThis day will go down in NBA history as the day David Stern absolutely prove what a genius he is by rescuing the sonics from their misery in Seattle
ReplyDeleteGreat job Mr. Stern (applause) !!!
ReplyDeleteI just heard that ESPN's Outside the Lines today is discussing the Sonics and there may be interviews with Stern and Gov. Gregoire. Bob Ley - "They're saying very different things." Should be interesting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip; it'll be interesting to see if they get any new information.
ReplyDeleteWorst case - nothing new comes out, but the information is shown to a national audience. The more the rest of the country talks about this situation, the worse David Stern looks.
ESPN has a poll on its front page right now asking where the Sonics should play next season. Spread the word and get as many as we can to vote for Seattle.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the segment on the Sonics on Outside the Lines was pretty good (I don't live in Seattle, and I'm not sure if the show is live or tape delayed).
Hey, I am a Clevelander, I root for the best team in the league, the Cavaliers! yeah baby! However,I feel for you guys there in Seattle. Clay Bennett and his rootin tootin, hillbillies in the front office need to go crawl back into that black hole void of culture and class that is called Oklahoma City, and not be able to drag the Sonics down with them. I hope and pray for your team gets to stay there in Seattle. Who woulda thought it, a team that is in the top ten? rated cities for media, compared to the 46th? pshhh.
ReplyDelete"This day will go down in NBA history as the day David Stern absolutely prove what a genius he is by rescuing the sonics from their misery in Seattle"
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I'm SURE the Sonics players are THRILLED about being "rescued" from one of the biggest, high-profile, most livable cities in the US to . . . um . . . Oklahoma. That's why Kevin Durant was crying after the last game in Seattle, right? /sarcasm
@b.diddy:
ReplyDeleteDavid Stern "rescuing" the Sonic players from Seattle is just as intelligent a phrase as, "Isiah Thomas just saved the Knick players from having to compete in the playoffs."
Attention people Clay Bennet OWNS the team... There is absolutely no way in hay that he can be told where to move his franchise. THE TEAM DOES NOT BELONG TO THE CITY IN WHICH IT PLAYS!!! As long as the national basketball association gives approval, the owner of the team has every right to station his team where ever he see fit, epescially if keeping the team there was not included as a condition of sale. Wake up and smell the coffee Seattle, you all will be watching that team play on t.v. next year because no court in America can award this team back to its previous owner just because he wants it back. Boston didnt get babe ruth back, and the " STarbucks Guy" and Seattle wont get their FORMER team back either.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the legal opinion, b.diddy. But it might help for you to understand what the lawsuit is about for you pop off. Your saintly Bennett was supposed to try dilligently until October 31, 2007 to keep the team in Seattle. But he was already planning his exit strategy in April. He lied. He lied about lying. And if he ever comes out of hiding, he'll lie about lying about lying. He publicly threw in the towel a month and a half before his self-imposed deadline. He's not a very good lier.
ReplyDeleteAlso, just for the record: it's the SEATTLE SuperSonics, not the Bennett SuperSonics. Yes he owns the team (and doing a terrific job, too). But the team existed in Seattle for 39 years without him, and there are a lot of fans, organization people, and ex-players who put a lot more of themselves into this team than Bennett has. All he's done is tear things down since he's bought the team, and now he's tearing it away from people who have cared about it for a lot longer and a lot deeper than he has. And this is the first citizen of Oklahoma. How proud you all must be.
Seriously, think about that. Then go for a walk, come back and read this again, then think some more. If you still think the same way, you might wanna consider donating your brain to science.
Believe it or not, I don't think b.diddy is even from Oklahoma. I think this loser just likes to laugh at people who are getting screwed over by corporate fatcats. I'm sure he likes to boo auto workers in Michigan right after they get laid off from GM. Yes, our tears and our misery give him sustenance, like any other heartless ghoul.
