Dear Bob

Dear Bob,

It’s over.

I really wanted this to work out. Honest. After Nate and Dwayne left, and Phil Jackson and Larry Brown signed on with other teams, and Paul Silas didn’t want to come here, you were my top choice to coach the Sonics.

After another humiliating blowout loss last night, however, it’s clearly time for you to go. Nothing personal. You’re a great guy. Everyone loves your card tricks. You just can’t coach worth a crap.

I know it wasn’t all your fault. AD and Garbage Bag left. Vlad’s a bitch. Every team’s got problems, Bob. Great coaches figure out ways to make it work (see last season).

You’ve always been a team player, Bob, so now it’s time to take one for the team. You know Wally and Rick won’t fire you. Not their style. Quit now, before the entire season goes down the tube. I know you’ll end up on your feet, Bob. You’ve always got that modeling career to fall back on.

Lots of Love,

Paul Merrill

p.s. Do you know where we can reach Paul Silas?

(UPDATE: Dag, that was quick! Bob Weiss was officially canned today. If I knew the Sonics would grant my every wish, I would've asked them to bring back the Wheedle too!)

  1. "before the whole season goes down the tube..."

Too late, man. I think this last home stand "tubed" us already. We are the team everyone said we were last year, until we proved everyone wrong. Now, everything they said at the beginning of last year is coming true: We can't rebound or defend anyone, we have no low post presence, and unless we shoot the lights out of the gym, were going to get beat.

  2. He's gone, officially.

Sonics fire Weiss, replace him with Hill
CHICAGO - Seattle SuperSonics general manager Rick Sund fired head coach Bob Weiss this morning and replaced him with assistant coach Bob Hill.

    I like it

  3. Well, I don't see Hill saving the season, so lets go with the rest of my plan - rest Ray, use the others. Make them learn defense first. No 3s - get them the hard way. Toughen up.

  4. you got to love the picture of hill and cleaves on nba.com LOL but hill is the same idiot that told teams smush parker was a joke. well mr hill look smush is doing better then every point guard on your own team. we hire another retard.. great. lets just throw in the towel now.

  5. Hill isn't responsible for the make up of the team.

As bad as Rid has been, he still averages more assists than Smush Parker.

  6. This merits a whole column, but I thought I'd throw this in for consideration.

Take yourself back to 1990-1991, so far ago that OJ was free to roam the halls of USC, Bill Clinton was just a governor, and I was rooting for Bill Musgrave.

Mired with a 9-16 record, the Indiana Pacers fire head coach Dick Versace and replace him with Bob Hill. Hill guides the young Pacers to a 32-25 record the rest of the way, finishing with a strong 3-2 loss to the Celtics in the post-season.

Can it happen again? Who knows. But we all know that it wasn't going to happen with Bob Weiss.

  7. I was going to go into a rant about how much I hate Luke Ridnour, but I'll save everyone the details. Has anyone heard much about the return of Jay Williams, the former 1st round pick whose life was turned upside down by a motorcycle accident? Is it true he is looking for a team?

Also if the Pacers are waiting on the Nuggets to acquire players they covet from the Sonic's roster, why can't the Supes work out a deal for Artest themselves?

  8. Ridnour has looked like a puss for a lot of the season. He plays scared waaaay too much. He may average more assists than Smush, but Smush (what the hell kind of name is Smush?!) is aggressive and fearless much like Antonio Daniels, which is exactly why he played in crunch time while Ridnour would sit. I like Ridnour but he's gutless on the court.

  9. I wrote about this before, but Hill is as qualified to coach the Sonics as anyone else they're going to find. I like Musselman, but he doesn't know the players the way Hill does, and the Sonics can't afford a two-week training session if they bring someone in. If this team is going to make the playoffs, they need to start winning now. Hill's enough of a hard-ass to make it happen.

  10. No one was complaining about Ridnour last year... He can't deal with adversity yet, he needs to be on a good team to be good, like Collison. They just need to play better as a team, and its obvious it wasn't just gonna happen, they need someone to force them to (aka Nate, now Bob Hill). Luke needs to penetrate more, just like Ray needs to play D (jesus, this one play he stepped out of a Pacer's way, just moved away making no effort to stop a layup, WHAT??!) and many other players need to do things. Its the team that needs to play better as a collective unit. Rid's play is based off his teammates, as is Collisons. Reggie, Rashard, Damien and Ray (sort of) are doing well. That means its time for Vlade and Vitalyto step up, Flip to play right, and Fortson to settle down.

  12. this might seem crazy to everyone here buti think the next move is to give cleaves a few starts at point and see how he preforms. lets not kid ourselves wilkin looks way out of position at point and mateen has been very efficent this year. its worth a shot, it could save us frommaking a dumb trade.

  13. Sorry Lance, No such luck for the Blazers. Sonics are keeping Weiss for the card tricks.

  14. Prior to the start of the season, I was one of the few on this site who brought up the likelihood of how the Seattle Supersonics were set for a let down without any solid defensive players on the roster.

Anyhow, first and foremost, the demotion of Bob Weiss to an advisor is a good move by GM Rick Sund (a.k.a., CEO/President Wally Walker's bitch), with the hiring of Bob Hill being a second good move.

Now, with that out of the way, it's time for some trades, with the following being some of my current proposals:

First, with Tony Delk being healthy and on the trade market, Sund attempt to acquire Delk from the Atlanta Hawks for center Vitaly Potapenko; Delk, in lieu of Ronald "Flip" Murray -- who should be riding the pine -- would be a solid third guard.

Next, Sund should trade power forward Danny Fortson, the draft rights of power forward Peter Fehse, the draft rights of small forward Mickaël Gelabale, the draft rights of point guard Paccelis Morlende, a 2006 NBA second-round draft pick [via the Memphis Grizzlies], and a 2007 NBA second-round draft pick [via the Memphis Grizzlies] to the Indiana Pacers for center Scot Pollard.

Then, Sund should attempt to trade away center Mikki Moore to a team that is in desperate need of a post player for a young, talented swingman—such as small forward Julius Hodge of the Denver Nuggets.

Lastly, Sund should send both center Robert Swift and center Johan Petro to the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBDL, so that each of them can get seasoning and playing time.

  15. AK....why would we give up all of that for Scot Pollard? Am i missing something or was that a Joke?

I would have Danny Fortson on our team over Pollard anyday. When fortson plays well the Sonics have a really good chance of winning. I dont see a reason of getting rid of Fortson... well i guess he is crazy.

And do we need another small forward?

I do agree with sending the centers to NBDL. At least one of them it doesnt make sense to have both of them not playing.

  16. So much for giving Mateen some playing time he just got waived

  17. AK, Do you just recycle your old posts? I was wondering when you were going to bring up the oh-so-valuable 2nd round draft pick rights for Pollard deal again.

  18. Did I miss something, AK? Where is the Pierce deal?
