New Year, New Rumors

Seattle Supersonics guard Mike Wilks
Is it "go time" foe Wee Wilks?

Like most of us, the Seattle Supersonics woke up this morning with a hell of a holiday hangover. After the thrilling high of a one-game win streak, the Sonics face the harsh realities of the New Year:

Discuss!

I agree, it would be better than Okie-ville, but can't we do better than RENTON? (note: I lived in Renton for a LONG time and Raf still does!)

Please. All y'all Horn-Rims diss life here in the Derrty South King County, frontin' like you ain't making weekly treks to Ikea and Fry's. Don't lie, I see the neighborhood parking stickers on your Subarus and Jettas.

The location that they're looking at in Renton should be a decent one in terms of year-round hustle and bustle--it'll be right in the middle of one of those Disney-fied pre-fab downtowns (see: Redmond Town Center, U-Village, Kent Station). So it won't have the authentic grit of a Seattle or even Ballard neighborhood, true; but the burbs are where the diehards are at, kids. We don't have no boujie symphony hall or opera house out here.

Then again, the article Paul cites makes mention of the Bellevue plan including "people movers"--moving sidewalks straight out of the Jetsons! If the Bellevue SuperSonics usher in the era of flying cars and robot maids, who am I to oppose that?!

Don't forget, Renton is located conveniently close to many $2.99 breakfast places - an important consideration.

Raf, forgive my ignorance, but aren't you supposed to work in a "don't sleep on Renton" in there somewhere?

Just keepin' it real.

Who's gonna be cut? The real question is who cares? I personally like Wilks. Every time he steps onto the court he's busting his ass and working hard. He's small, quick and persistant as hell. The other two don't seem to affect the Sonics in the slightest of forms so it really doesn't make any difference. I wish they'd do something about Bob Hill though. I think at this point the problem isn't his knowledge of the game or his play-calling. It's just that he seems to have failed in establishing a healthy relationship with the team, and it seems that the players don't take him seriously either. Maybe it's time for a fresh voice to tell them how much they suck. A new coach really *can* make a huge difference almost instantaneously. Look what Riley did to Miami after Van Gundy left. Look at what Brown did with Detroit when he took over after Carlisle left. It *is* possible that a good coach could give a new life to this team.

Wow - no love for Renton?!?!? I remember back in days of yore playing hoops at the Renton Community Center (you know the one, across Maple Valley Hwy from the Silver Cloud?). That place was TIGHT.

As the self-proclaimed chairman of the Renton Chizamber of Commerce, I can tell you that "Don't Sleep on Renton" finished a close second to the current slogan, "Renton: A Rusted-Out Ford Escort in Front of Every Split-Level."
