Sonics Add A Voice

The Sonics announced a replacement for David Locke on Tuesday, naming former Clipper, Maverick, and Hornet man Matt Pinto to handle the radio play-by-play duties.

In addition to his NBA experience Pinto has also broadcast University of Hawaii men’s sports, Boston College basketball, Brown University football, Hawaii Islanders and Pawtucket Red Sox AAA baseball. Which is good, because if the Sonics break out into a football scrimmage during one of the games, we'll be covered. Or, if (God forbid), Dave Neihaus and Steve Raible decide they want to finally admit that they love each and shack up in Vancouver as "life partners," well, Seattle will still be covered for radio duties on its other pro sports teams.

It's unknown if the Sonics will continue with having Kevin Calabro call radio games when there is no tv coverage, which they did last year, or if KC will get the night off when the tv is dark. It's worth noting that while working for the Clips, Pinto would step aside for Ralph Lawler when LA's game was not televised.

Wow, Matt Pinto looks like he could be the younger brother of Vince McMahon. It'd be flat-out hilarious if Pinto announces in a similar style to McMahon, too.

Or older brother of Dan DeVone?

I looked for comments about Pinto on the net and didnt find much. A few accepting, a few distracting. Didnt find any podcasts.

Raised in Boston area (did Presti have a vote?) before going SoCal in high school. Between Locke and Calabro in age but closer to KC. Blogs posts recently used more stats than he did in Dallas but not real geeky. I saw more talk of player's game, not a lot of coach second-guessing.

He really does look like Vinny Mac.

That's scary...

Actually, I think he looks more like George Hamilton's sneaky younger brother. I do see the McMahon resemblance, though.

No offense to Mr. Pinto, but don't you get the feeling Bubba Bennett is running things on the cheap? I wonder if they cut KC's salary when the dropped him from the radio.

Pinto is not bad, I've seen him on a few Dallas broadcasts as well as some old UH games.

I doubt that Pinto comes cheaper than Locke (based on experience) - I guess the Locke dismissal was based on other factors (i.e. speaking his mind, his voice, etc...). I'll miss the genuine enthusiasm that Locke brought though!

Brian's right, if anything the Sonics are spending more money now than before. It was Schultz & Co. who tried to do things on the cheap by using the simulcast for all that time. I think the Sonics were the only team in the league going with the simulcast option.

Pinto is a veteran broadcaster, he's not some guy they found at Green River Community College smoking weed, so I'm guessing he'd come here only for a good chunk of money. Plus, he's a SoCal guy to some extent, so he wouldn't leave there unless he was getting compensated for it. Not sure why he parted ways with the Clippers, though.

He's a little on the dull side for me. Sounds like his first job. I agree with Paul Merrill's comments.
